Best D&D 5e Combat Automation Modules for Foundry VTT (2026)
Last updated October 12, 2026
Last checked: October 2026 · Verified for Foundry v14 · System: D&D 5e
Running combat in Foundry can be as manual or as automated as you like. These modules handle the repetitive parts of D&D 5e combat: rolling attacks, applying damage, tracking conditions and effects, and resolving mobs. That way your table spends its time on decisions, not arithmetic. Every pick below is listed on FoundryMods as verified for Foundry v14. Start small: add one layer, play a session, then add the next.

⚠ D&D 5e 6.x note (October 2026): the current dnd5e system is 6.0.x, which runs only on Foundry v14. Midi-QOL and DAE need their 14.6.0+ builds for dnd5e 6. Their authors say those builds must be installed via manifest link for now, because the versions listed on FoundryMods (Midi 14.0.13, DAE 14.0.16) support dnd5e 5.3 only. For that reason the 1-click loadout covers everything below except Midi-QOL, DAE, and Midi Item Showcase. Add those three by manifest if you want full attack-to-damage automation.

1. Midi Quality of Life Improvements (Midi-QOL)

Midi-QOL is the best-known 5e automation module, with more than a quarter of Foundry installs. It automates rolling weapon and spell attacks and applying damage, among other things. Expect a settings deep-dive: Midi has a lot of options, so decide up front how much you want automated (just rolls, or rolls plus damage application) and turn on only that. It's commonly used alongside DAE and the Midi Item Showcase. On dnd5e 6.x, use Midi-QOL 14.6.0 or later, installed from the author's manifest link; 14.0.13 and earlier don't support dnd5e 6. Midi requires libWrapper, socketlib, and DAE.
2. Dynamic Active Effects (DAE)

DAE (a replacement for the original Dynamic Effects) extends Foundry's active effects. It's one of the most-installed 5e modules on FoundryMods, at roughly a third of installs. If you plan to automate buffs, debuffs, and item effects, DAE is usually the foundation. On dnd5e 6.x you need DAE 14.6.0+, installed via manifest link. DAE requires libWrapper and socketlib.
3. Automated Conditions 5e
Automates the rolling side of common 5e conditions, so the right advantage or disadvantage is applied without anyone having to remember it. If you also run Midi-QOL, check the module page for notes on running both together.
4. Automated Masteries 5e
Automates the 5e system's weapon masteries. Requires Automated Conditions 5e.
5. DFreds Convenient Effects
Adds easy-to-use, toggleable active effects for common cases. It's great if you want effect tracking without building every effect by hand.
6. Midi Item Showcase – Community
A collection of Midi automations from the Foundry automation community. Use it to get ready-made automations for items and features instead of building them yourself. Requires Midi-QOL (so on dnd5e 6.x it waits on the Midi-QOL 14.6.0+ manifest install).
7. Mob Attack Tool
Adds support for mob attacks in dnd5e, which is a lifesaver when twelve goblins all swing at once.
8. Token Action HUD D&D 5e

A repositionable HUD of actions for the selected token. Players and GMs reach attacks, spells, and features without opening the sheet. Install it with Token Action HUD Core (FoundryMods).
9. Automated Animations

Automatically plays JB2A animations for most melee and ranged attacks, spell attacks, and instant spells. It isn't rules automation, but it makes automated combat readable at a glance. Pair it with Sequencer and JB2A (free). ▶ “Sequencer” (1:48) in our Top 25 Lightning Round.
Pick one, not both
- Midi-QOL vs. Ready Set Roll for D&D5e: both change the roll workflow. Choose one. (Ready Set Roll is only verified through Foundry v13 on FoundryMods.)
- Premade automation packs such as Cauldron of Plentiful Resources (▶ settings walkthrough, 32:19) and Gambit's Premades (▶ settings walkthrough, 28:28) are popular, but FoundryMods currently lists them as verified only through v13. Check before upgrading to v14.

Frequently asked questions
What's the best combat automation module for D&D 5e in Foundry VTT?
Midi-QOL is the most widely used. It automates attack rolls and damage application, and is usually paired with Dynamic Active Effects.
Do I need Midi-QOL to automate D&D 5e?
No. Many tables use lighter options such as Automated Conditions 5e, DFreds Convenient Effects, and the dnd5e system's own features. Add Midi-QOL when you want full attack-to-damage automation.
Are these modules compatible with Foundry v14?
Everything in the main list is verified for Foundry v14 on FoundryMods. Modules only verified through v13 are flagged. On the current dnd5e 6.x system, Midi-QOL and DAE need their 14.6.0+ builds, which are installed by manifest link for now.
Can I install all of these at once?
Almost. The 1-click loadout installs everything except Midi-QOL, DAE, and Midi Item Showcase, including the required libraries. Add those three by manifest link if you want full Midi automation on dnd5e 6.x.
My game broke after installing automation modules. What now?
Use Find the Culprit! to isolate the conflicting module, then check that module's page for updates.
