How to Upgrade to Foundry VTT v14 Safely (Without Breaking Your World)

Last updated October 12, 2026

Foundry VTT v14 brings core Levels, region-based measured templates, detachable windows, and a lot more. Moving a live campaign to a new major version is where things go wrong, though: a module that isn't ready, a system update that drops old versions, a scene that doesn't migrate cleanly. This guide walks you through upgrading from v13 to v14 the safe way, using Foundry's own advice and the migration tips from our v14 Levels video.

The short version: back up, check your modules on FoundryMods' v14 compatibility tracker, test v14 on a copy of your data, then update. If you're mid-arc and a must-have module isn't ready, it's fine to wait.

1. Decide when to update

▶ “Introduction” in More Than Just Levels! - #FoundryVTT Version… (0:00)

Foundry's own advice: only run a live game on a Stable build, and even then expect to wait a while for your favorite modules and systems to update. The fewer modules you rely on, the sooner you can move. The D&D 5e and Pathfinder 2e systems are usually ready when a new stable version ships, but most other systems and modules need time, and they're mostly maintained by volunteers.

As of October 2026 the two biggest systems have moved on: dnd5e 6.0.x and pf2e 8.6 both require Foundry v14, so staying on v13 means staying on older system versions too. If you're in the middle of a campaign arc and a must-have module isn't ready, finish the arc on v13 first.

2. Back up everything

▶ “Setup Page Layout” in #FoundryVTT Basics - Getting Started With Fou… (3:15)

On the setup screen, open Manage Backups. You can back up individual worlds, modules, and systems, or take a snapshot of everything at once. Do this before every major update; a recent backup is what lets you go back to v13 if you need to. If you use a hosting service, it may have its own backup method instead, so check its documentation.

3. Check your modules and system

Open the Foundry v14 compatible modules tracker on FoundryMods. It lists the 500 most-installed modules and whether each one is verified for v14. As of October 11, 2026, 238 of them were compatible and 262 not yet. Sign in and use Check my modules to see how ready your own list is.

How to read a package's compatibility:

  • Minimum: if your Foundry or system is older than this, don't expect it to work.
  • Maximum: if your Foundry or system is newer than this, don't expect it to work.
  • Verified: the developer has checked it on this version, so you can reasonably expect it to work.
  • A version written as a whole number, like "14", means every release in that generation.

Check system compatibility too, not just Foundry. A module can be verified for v14 and still not support your system version. For example, the Midi-QOL and DAE builds listed on FoundryMods support dnd5e 5.3, and their dnd5e 6 builds are installed by manifest link. See Best D&D 5e combat automation modules for that case.

Common modules not yet verified for v14 include Wall Height, Drag Ruler, Simple Calendar, Token Attacher, Pings, Times Up, and Active Auras. Some have replacements or core equivalents; see Foundry v14 compatible modules.

4. Test v14 before game night

Foundry recommends testing a new major version before you run a real game in it, ideally well before the session where you switch.

  • Windows: download the Windows Portable build of v14, extract it, and run Foundry Virtual Tabletop.exe. It uses the same user data folder as your main install by default, so point it at a separate test data folder first, either from the setup screen or with a --dataPath="D:\Foundry_VTT_User_Data_Test" launch parameter on a shortcut.
  • macOS and Linux: run the Node build of v14 against a separate test user data folder (Linux can use the same --dataPath parameter).

Copy a world into the test folder, open it on v14, and play through a scene with your usual modules.

5. Install Foundry v14

The Update button on the setup screen handles minor versions (builds). A major version like v13 → v14 usually means downloading the new installer and doing a full install. You keep your data. If you use a hosting service, check its documentation for how it handles major updates.

6. After updating: modules and migration

▶ “Installing Add On Modules” in #FoundryVTT Basics - Getting Started With Fou… (9:33) · “Migration Tools for Levels Module Users” in #FoundryVTT Basics - A Practical Guide to v14… (40:42)

  1. Update your packages. On the setup screen's Add-on Modules and Game Systems tabs, use Update All.
  2. Need a specific version? Paste that version's manifest URL into the install dialog. That's also how you install builds that aren't listed yet, like the Midi-QOL and DAE builds for dnd5e 6.
  3. Levels module users: core Levels replaces the old Levels module in v14. With the Levels module enabled on v14, a migration pop-up lets you migrate your scenes, compendiums, or the current scene to core Levels. Mass Edit has similar utilities, and the Baileywiki Content Module includes a macro for migrating individual scenes. None of these tools are perfect, so expect some cleanup, and keep your backup. Then learn the new system with our v14 Levels guide.
  4. Re-activate and check each world's modules in Manage Modules, including dependencies.

7. If something breaks

  • The world won't load: on the setup screen, choose Edit World, check Launch in Safe Configuration, and save. The next launch disables all modules, deactivates scenes, and stops playing audio, so you can get back in and turn modules on again one at a time.
  • Something is wrong but the world loads: use Find the Culprit! to find the conflicting module with an automated binary search. ▶ “Honorable Mention: Find the Culprit!” (2:10)
  • Still stuck: restore your backup and stay on v13 until your modules catch up.

Frequently asked questions

Should I update to Foundry v14 right now?

Only if your system and must-have modules are ready. Check them on the FoundryMods v14 compatibility tracker. If you're mid-campaign and something important isn't ready, it's fine to wait.

Will updating to v14 delete my worlds?

No, your data stays in your user data folder. Back up anyway with Manage Backups (or take a snapshot) before updating, so you can go back to v13 if needed.

How do I update Foundry from v13 to v14?

The Update button handles builds within a version. For a major version like v14, download the new installer and do a full install; your data is kept. If you use a hosting service, check its documentation.

Can I test Foundry v14 without touching my main install?

Yes. On Windows, use the Portable build with a separate test user data folder. On macOS and Linux, run the Node build against a separate data folder.

Do I still need the Levels module in v14?

Levels are now core in v14. With the Levels module enabled on v14, its migration pop-up can convert existing scenes to core Levels. Expect to tidy up afterwards.

My world won't load after updating. What now?

Edit the world on the setup screen, check Launch in Safe Configuration, and launch. All modules are disabled for that launch, so you can turn them back on one at a time.
